International Day of People with a Disability (IDPWD) was celebrated on Friday December 7 at Boroondara Sports Complex (BSC) with an event hosted in collaboration with the City of Boroondara. Cr Lisa Hollingsworth attended the event, welcoming participants and taking part in activities throughout the day.
The day consisted of a range of different all-inclusive sports and activities which were hosted by key partners and some special guests.
Goal Ball Victoria introduced attendees to Goal Ball, a unique sport designed for people living with a visual disability that has no mainstream equivalent. The come and try session highlighted that it is truly a sport like no other. While Disability Sport and Recreation brought along some special guests to host Wheelchair AFL and Basketball activities. Brendan Stroud (Collingwood Wheelchair AFL Captain) and Yasmina McGlone (Richmond Wheelchair AFL Best & Fairest Winner) led the way in showcasing their sport.
A Come and Try event for Aero-Base Community allowed participants to be introduced to the 5-week program which BSC hopes to fund into the future through YMCA Open Doors. The program, which is supported by Gymnastics Victoria, provides the opportunity for people with a disability to learn a dance routine and the submit their routine into a competition where they can win funds for their service.
The IDPWD event highlighted the commitment that BSC has made to ensure their programming is more inclusive. Since hosting their first Wheelchair Basketball event, BSC have continued to ensure they are providing as many all-inclusive opportunities as possible, this was evident in the diverse range of programs showcased at the IDPWD event.
The partnerships highlighted by the IDPWD event will continue to provide all-inclusive opportunities and ensure participants can continue with their new found favourite activities.
